Although there was not a lot of visual communication completed during this class, it is a very important aspect of communication. We studied visual rhetoric by looking at websites, pictures and paintings. I learned a lot about how colors and layout can make a viewer feel a certain way. For example one of the websites we looked at was for a zoo. This website featured a lot of bright colors, bold word fonts and pictures of families. These aspects all made the zoo seem exciting and family friendly. We also talked about what some websites leave off their pages, as they don’t want to draw attention to some items. For this we looked at school websites, and searched for lawsuits or any bad news about those schools. It is much easier to analyze a website visually, as they have words, than it is to look at a picture and figure out exactly what is going on. Rarely can you get a whole picture without a caption or title to give you some background. It is also nice to discuss images with a group, as each person has their own life experiences to contribute to the discussion. I hope to work more with visual communication in the future, and this class has given me a good solid start.
