Hello! This is the English journal of Katie Primrose (that’s me). Throughout this website you will be able to find examples of my argumentative writing, persuasive writing, some visual rhetorical analysis as well as find out more about me. There should be easy to follow links at the top of this page, and you are able to click on whatever type of paper you choose to view.
To My Professor: First off I would like to thank you for being an encouraging, open and kind teacher. You were always available to discuss questions with your students and you taught us how to read and interpret – both instructions and articles. You taught us about sentence structure and how to find key concepts in photographs. Even though we weren’t always the most active in class you pushed us out of our comfort zones. Next I want to discuss how you helped me grow as a writer.
When I started this class I was slightly worried as it has been a little while since I have taken a true english class. As the class began I found my rough writing skills came flooding back, and I was able to complete assignments, but you pushed me to truly work hard on my technique. You taught us about dependent and independent clauses, which I must have learned at some point, but now I’m sure I will forever know how to recognize each. This came in handy in my last assignment as I had one paragraph that had too many dependent clauses and I had to find a way to turn them into independent clauses.
For the visual rhetoric assignment, I had a lot of difficulty interpreting the instructions, and figuring how to integrate rhetoric into my ‘art analysis’. You pointed out how my paper became a review of the art, without any discussion behind the painting. Having to use the same paper, but add in a new element really pushed my writing. My creativity was really in the spotlight for that paper, as I chose a hard visual – an watercolor painting with a very simple title. In order to complete the assignment I had to find a point of view that the artist was portraying. My argument was of a small town way of life, and from there I had to find support. I really valued the ideas you gave me, and used those to push my writing.
I am very thankful for this class and the positive learning environment from both my teacher and my classmates. I feel like I now have a refined skill for reading papers of my peers. We discussed as a class how no one ever intends to be mean while correcting a paper. Because of our understanding we were able to help each other without fear of seeming rude. This class allowed many opportunities to discuss what I learned from the readings. We did so much group work allowing us to become better communicators. Switching groups regularly allowed us to see other points of view, and expand our horizons. Becoming a better reader has improved my writing, as I can now think about how my words will be interpreted by my readers. I am thankful for this class, and everyone who encouraged my writing this semester.
