Assignment 4 Reflection

  • Consider what persuasive visual rhetorical techniques were “invisible” to you before this assignment. Design principles that lead the eye or emphasize certain aspects of an image, for example, often have an unconscious effect on an unsuspecting audience. Design choices that have emotional impact may have that impact because of color, size, alignment, etc. Because of your study of visual rhetoric, what can you say you are now more aware of? Can you name a visual that will not be as persuasive now as it may have been before you did this assignment?

Usually when I look at an article, I never think about the rhetorical techniques. All these techniques seemed to be “invisible” to me. This visual analysis gave me the opportunity to read more into these advertisements and forced me to look at it with a more well trained eye. I can now see the effects of using certain colors to portray different meanings. I can also see how foreground and background is used to emphasize one part of the advertisement while subtly sending you a different meaning at the same time. Overall, I learned to question everything about an advertisement.

  • What feedback did you receive from your instructor or your peers that you agreed with? What did you decide to do about that feedback? If there was feedback you received that you did not agree with, discuss what that was, why you did not agree with it, and what you did about it (It is perfectly fine to disagree with feedback—this is your paper). Use specific examples from your paper.

One piece of advise that I was given that I did not take to heart was that I should add more detail and be more concise. Looking back at the grade that I got for the assignment, I wish that I had taken that advise and also spend more time revising my work to make it more structured. The essays needs an overhaul on its structure and vocabulary selection.

Assignment 3 Reflection

  • What feedback did you receive from your instructor or your peers that you agreed with? What did you decide to do about that feedback? If there was feedback you received that you did not agree with, discuss what that was, why you did not agree with it, and what you did about it (It is perfectly fine to disagree with feedback—this is your paper). Use specific examples from your paper.

One piece of feedback that was given to me was the fact that I had a lot of ‘fluff’. I always give too much detail that ends up being monotonous. I agree with her but without that fluff my papers would never reach the required words. The way that I write is very straight to the point so ‘fluff’ needs to be added.

  • What was the most difficult part of this assignment for you? What did you do to meet this challenge? What goals are you setting for the next assignment? Knowing yourself, what do you need to do in order to accomplish your goals?

The most difficult part of this assignment has always been juggling this homework with homework with other classes. This project was done the night before the rough draft was due. Right now this is because my only academic goal is to complete all my homework, whether or not it is last minute or not. Knowing myself, I should try to start working on it a couple days ahead of time so I don’t spend the whole night working on a paper.
